Striped Text Effect

Introduction:

In this tutorial we will add stripes to text to give it some flair. This is a great exercise in learning to combine shapes with your text to get interesting effects. It also illustrates how to use selections from one layer to erase areas from another layer. The striped technique shown here is great for designs that have a fun or kid type theme involved.

Step-By-Step:

1. Open a new document in Photoshop.
2. Select the Type Tool.
3. Type your text and name the layer "Text".

4. Choose a color for your stripes.
5. Select the Rectangle Tool (make sure Fill Pixels option is active).
6. Create a new layer. Name it "Stripes".
7. Draw a thin rectangle that is taller than your text.

8. Click CTRL+T and use the corner shape handles to rotate the rectangle to an angle.
9. Move the rectangle to a position that is overlapping the text. Hit "Enter" key to accept the change.

10. Select the Move Tool.
11. Hold down the ALT key and click and drag a copy of the rectangle. Move it to the right of the previous rectangle.

12. Repeat step 11 until you have made multiple rectangles to represent the stripes.

13. From the Layers menu, hold the Shift key and select all the Stripe layers.

14. Click CTRL+E to merge them all into one layer.
15. Select the "Text" layer from the Layers Palette so that it is active.
16. Select the Magic Wand tool and select an area outside the text.

17. Select the "Stripes" layer from the Layers Palette so that it is active.
18. Hit the Delete key.
19. Click CTRL + D to deselect everything.

20. Click CTRL + E to merge the "Stripes" layer with the "Text" layer.
21. Open the layer properties for the merged layer.
22. Change the properties for "Drop Shadow" to the following:

25. You should now have your striped text effect!
